What if you desperately wanted to have a child, but your government and religion prohibited you from using the one medical treatment that could help you? Beautiful Sin tells the surprising story of three couples struggling with infertility in Costa Rica, who take their government before an international human rights court to demand the right to use in vitro fertilization (IVF). Costa Rica is the only country in the world that has outlawed IVF, a fertility treatment in which doctors create embryos in the lab. The film's Costa Rican-American director and narrator follows the couples and their legal battle for a decade. The result is a compassionate and incisive journey through the politics of reproductive rights and the hardships of infertility.
Thank you to Judith and the Workshop for their help completing this film, which was 11 years in the making. The film was funded by Latino Public Broadcasting, Chicken & Egg Pictures, Women in Film Foundation Film Finishing Fund, and the Pacific Pioneer Fund, among others.
