Hello, Producer Academy Family! Just wanted to let you know that we'll be having a free screening of my documentary "Tales of the Waria" at Harvard University on Thursday, April 5-- lest any of you be in the area. The ITVS-funded documentary follows a community of transgender women in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, as they search for love and intimacy. Shot over the course of three years with the help of the local transgender community, the film provides a rare glimpse into issues rarely discussed in depth by the Western media: Indonesia, Islamic culture, and the daily life and struggles of transgender communities around the world.

Congratulations Kathy!
Thanks, Daniel! There's actually a screening closer to your neck of the woods. We'll be playing at the Arizona International Film Festival in Tuscon on Tuesday, April 17, 6pm. I know it's still a trek, but if you happen to be nearby that day or have a hankering for some transgender love stories, do drop by! :-)
Kathy,
When can the rest of us, not near a screening, get to see it.
Michael
I forgot to post that I attended the screening and the film is just great. The discussion afterwards was intense, and Kathy handled it with calm and an incredible amount of knowledge. Really fun -- hope others get to see it soon. J
Thanks, Judith, for the kind words! It was so great seeing you again. And Michael, I should have been better about posting the film's screenings on this website. We had a screening at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in February-- though Missoula is still a ways away from Bozeman, no? It's big country up where you live :-)
Never fear-- an opportunity to watch the film is right around the corner. We're having our national TV broadcast on PBS's "Global Voices" come Sunday, June 3, 10pm. Exact broadcast times vary by location so you can visit the ITVS website to check local listings. I'll also be doing a Q&A online following the initial broadcast. And if you miss the broadcast, more good news-- starting June 4, the film will be streaming for for free on PBS.org for one month.
Hope this helps. I'll put up another post closer to the date and remind folks. Thanks so much for your continued interest in the film!
Best to you and your family,
Kathy
Just marked my calendar. Can't wait to see it!
Fantastic. I'll watch. Sorry to miss you in Missoula, however, I moved to Idaho in January. Sounds like you've done quite well with it. Good for you!
