We have 3 alumni from the Producers Academy working on the URBAN INDIANS documentary: Larry Pourier, Charles 'Boots' Kennedye and Lisa D. Olken. It's quite incredible that we all found one another and that we all have very fond memories of our time with Judith in Boston.
URBAN INDIANS is a co-production between Rocky Mountain PBS in Denver and Native American Public Telecommunications in Nebraska. The film explores the complicated legacy of the US government’s assimilation policies that encouraged American Indians to leave their homelands and relocate to metropolitan areas across the country during the 1950s to the 1970s.
We are shooting in Denver, Chicago, Oakland and Phoenix, plus Alburquerque & San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico, Montana's Fort Peck, Fort Belknap, and the Crow Agency Buffalo Hunt, in addition to Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Most of our shooting has been focused on relocatees, those that moved to the city and have stayed here . However, we will be soon concentrating on those who have returned to their reservations and homeland. These returnees also have dramatic stories on culture, homeland, identity and urbanization.
