Editorial Director 

Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational nonprofit that provides educational content, curriculum resources, and professional development to secondary school social studies, civics, humanities, and English teachers. Facing History’s educational content is informed by a unique pedagogical model that helps students explore questions of identity, human behavior, prejudice, and civic responsibility, and make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives today.

The Editorial Director will play a key role in helping Facing History exponentially scale its impact over the next five years. This is an exciting opportunity for a creative, strategic thinker who enjoys working at the intersection of strategy and content creation. The ideal candidate is a writer and learner at heart, who is passionate about our mission and excited to work with the wide range of issues, histories, and current events that comprise our editorial portfolio. 

The Editorial Director will be energized by the process of working with a cross-functional team to map out and execute a multi-year content development plan that supports Facing History’s goal to expand its global educator network and impact millions of students. In addition to playing a hands-on role in writing and editing content, he/she will be responsible for developing standards and templates for Facing History’s wide array of digital and print products supporting middle and high school educators.

The Editorial Director will:

· Work in partnership with senior Program leadership to execute a multi-year plan for content that supports Facing History’s mission and growth strategy.

· Conceive of print- and web-based content and multimedia products for middle and high school teachers and students, including lessons plans, units, playlists, video and other digital learning objects.

· Write and edit across a wide range of themes in the social studies or humanities disciplines and embed Facing History's unique pedagogy, tone, and approach.

· Through content audits and market analysis, develop and oversee an editorial schedule to adapt existing content to meet new standards and success metrics.

· Oversee the standardization of product types and templates for web and print products.

· Work with freelancers and staff to develop project scope and oversee product development.

· Perform developmental, language, and copy edits on all educator products.

· Improve workflows and project management systems to support content production.

· Understand and value consumer needs and integrate audience research, user testing, and evaluation to ensure successful user experience of content.

· Work closely with Program strategy, online learning, marketing, and Program implementation teams to ensure that goals, consumer needs, project schedules and budgets are met.

· Maintain knowledge and expertise in best practices in teaching, pedagogy, and assessment, and ensure those practices are reflected as appropriate in Facing History content.


· Superior writer/editor with at least 7 years of educational content development experience: developing/editing content and curriculum in History, Social Studies, and/or Humanities disciplines. Experience editing for middle and/or high school educator audience is required.

· At least 5 years successfully leading and supervising an editorial team.

· Proven track record in project management of educational products.

· Commitment to continuous learning about the subject areas in which we work and to innovations in pedagogy and practice.

· Strong knowledge of the middle/high school market, including educational trends related to standards, technology integration, changing student demographics and needs, and classroom realities.

· Experience adapting content for a range of print, digital, and e-learning formats and platforms.

· Keen interest in ed tech trends and commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

· Flexible problem solver who can juggle multiple long-term projects and also respond to unanticipated opportunities.

· Creative, dynamic, and inquisitive person who is invested in Facing History’s mission and commitment to intellectual rigor.
