5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Reception
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm Screening, Musical Performance and Discussion
The Ford Foundation and Philanthropy New York invite you to a special screening of “Kumu Hina” with a musical performance by Keali‛i Reichel and Shawn Pimental. The film tells the powerful story of Hina Wong-Kalu, a native Hawaiian transgender teacher, cultural practitioner and community leader. Using traditional culture, she inspires a female student to overcome convention and take the lead in the school's all-male hula troupe. But Hina faces challenges of her own. Don't miss this incredible docu-drama about a remarkable woman's fight for fairness—revealing Pacific Islanders' struggle to maintain their culture and values in modern-day Hawai‘i.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson (CPB/PBS Producers Workshop 2013) and Hina Wong-Kalu herself.
