Why Not Every Influencer is Successful on Instagram

Many people have watched Instagram influencers raking in big bucks and wondered if they could hitch their wagon to that star and earn a significant income. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that.

Instagram influencing is a challenging field to work in and requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Even then, there is no guarantee of success. Here are mistakes some less-than-successful influencers have made and how to avoid them:

Insufficient followers

To become a successful Instagram influencer, you need a significant following on the platform, according to Tech Crunch 50. To get yourself noticed, you could buy Instagram followers. However, you should only do so from reputable companies that will not sell you fake profiles. Their product should include real Instagram users that will interact with your posts. This is essential for Instagram success, as followers alone are not enough to make you popular on the platform. You need them to like, share, and interact with your posts.

The task at hand is still incomplete after this step. You need to keep growing your Instagram following by advertising, creating exciting posts, and capturing users’ imaginations. If your following does not grow, your career as an influencer will not either.

Risky business

In recent years, brands have had their fingers burned by influencers who turned out to have less-than-stellar pasts on social media. Indeed, racially insensitive, sexist, or anti-LGBTQIA+ posts have ruined many influencers’ careers. As a result, companies need to distance themselves from such influencers to preserve the brand’s reputation.

Some influencers have also been known to take things a step too far in their posts. While these posts might not involve a company’s brand, something too shocking or outrageous could affect its brand. Today, companies have to vet all potential influencers carefully.

This is tedious and time-consuming but necessary to avoid reputational embarrassment. Some organizations have decided to stop using influencers because a deep dive into someone’s social media history takes too long. They want to move forward with their product marketing campaigns.

Creating a real connection

Some influencers have short-lived relationships with companies when it turns out that their true colors and style do not suit an organization’s needs. The business’s efforts and resources to create a campaign in collaboration with an influencer is a downright flop, and they must look elsewhere.

Many company marketers are not experienced enough to find the right influencer the first time around. It is a problem that even some talent agents are grappling with. This is because entering a relationship with an influencer is a financial and marketing gamble.

Minimal engagement

While many marketers believe that an influencer with hundreds of thousands of followers will do their brand good, the reverse could be true. The influencer’s lack of engagement with their followers could ruin an entire campaign.

Think of the example above of buying real Instagram followers, not fake profiles. As real individuals, these followers are not compelled to continue following you if they do not like your product or you fail to engage with them. They will unfollow you if your content is not fresh and exciting and you fail to acknowledge their existence.

Poor content

Do not assume that most Instagram influencers snap a candid shot and post that online to immediate acclaim. Many influencers use professional photographers to get the perfect picture to post online. Their videos are rehearsed and edited. Filters and Photoshop are applied to their visuals.

Much time is devoted to the text accompanying their pictures and which hashtags they use. Virtually none of it is done off-the-cuff, as successful influencer marketing requires forethought and planning.
